Marijuana Revenue
Medical and recreational marijuana did not solve the school funding problem.
In reality, very little marijuana revenue goes to education.
MEDICAL VS RECREATIONAL
Medical marijuana carries the same sales tax as other goods purchased in the store (approx. eight percent in Colorado Springs). Recreational marijuana carries an additional 15 percent state excise tax that goes into the state general fund budget. School districts do not receive sales tax revenue.
EDUCATION FUNDING
Only $40 million of marijuana revenue is guaranteed to fund education (about ½ of one percent of the state budget) and that money is restricted to capital construction/school repairs and renovation.
GRANT BASED
The $40 million capital construction money is a grant based program. Despite applying for grants, District 2 has qualified for very little of these funds over the life time of this program and can not rely on it for a source of school funding.
